Mud Season
A Murder, A Love Story, A
Vermont Tale
Jerry, a backwoodsman and
misunderstood loner resides in a cabin outside a small Vermont town. When his
shy “courting” attempts fail with the local girls he decides to visit the
town brothel where his life is turned upside down.
Song, an illegal Chinese
immigrant and prostitute, is being held against her will and continues to be
abused by her not-so gentlemanly visitors. Upon his arrival and introduction,
Jerry finds Song an unwilling participant and at her wits end. When Song breaks
out in a rage, he panics and seeks out the Madame for a refund. The Madame will
have nothing of it, a skirmish ensues and she is accidentally killed. For fear
of being arrested for the Madame’s death, Jerry flees.
The following day he finds Song
hiding in the woods near his cabin who, unaware the Madame is dead, fears
retribution. Jerry decides to take Song in, and together they learn about each
other and the eternal conflict between man and woman, American and Chinese
culture as well as right and wrong.
